The clue is in the title: Scratch Perverts are turned on by playing vinyl, they get thrills from toying with any type of beat and have done ever since they first formed back in 1996. Since those early days, the trio’s scratch and battle DJing has been second to none and the Perverts have won four World titled to prove it. The ensuing years have seen core members Tony Vegas and DJ Prime Cuts become synonymous with not only hip hop, but an increasingly wide range of musical styles from house to soul, funk to jazz. Music has always coursed through their veins, right back to the early days when Prime Cuts worked Saturday jobs in London’s Soul Jazz Records, and at Mr Bongo, and when he helped to start another Soho institution in the form of Deal Real records.
Scratch Perverts’ deep and intrinsic link with music is one that has strengthened over time, something that is reflected in their continued involvement in the underground scene. For 14 years they have played every single month at London’s foremost club, fabric, and famously turned in their mix to the Fabriclive series back in 2005. They have supported Beastie Boys, Sex Pistols and Ian Brown, worked on development of both DJ Hero I and II computer games and turned out many more mix CDs for the likes of Ministry of Sound and Harmless, all of which display their logic defying ability to thread captivating soundtracks out of seemingly disparate parts.
