Paul Murphy, known professionally as Skratch Bastid, was born on September 2, 1982. Originally from Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada, he began his musical journey by playing the euphonium in high school. His career in turntablism began in the early 2000s, leading to his rise in the DJ battle circuit. He gained significant recognition with his first Scribble Jam DJ Battle win in 2003, which he followed with additional victories in 2004 and 2007.
Skratch Bastid’s career further developed with the release of his collaborative album, “Taking Care of Business,” with John Smith and Pip Skid, on his label First Things First Records in 2005. A notable milestone occurred in 2008 when he became the first Canadian DJ to be nominated for the Juno Award for Producer of the Year for his work on Buck 65’s album, “Situation.” He continued to receive critical acclaim, earning another Juno Award nomination in 2016 for Instrumental Album of the Year for “Spin Cycle,” a collaborative project with the Afiara String Quartet.
Beyond his achievements as an artist, Skratch Bastid has taken on significant roles within the global DJ community. He serves as a global ambassador and judge for Red Bull’s annual Thre3style DJ competition, highlighting his influence in the turntablism scene. Since 2010, he has also organized “Bastid’s BBQ” events in various cities, which are daytime block-party style gatherings that combine music and community engagement.
