About

Alexis Taylor was born on April 20, 1980, in London, England. His mother is a psychoanalyst, and his father is a professor of English. Taylor studied English at Jesus College, Cambridge, from 1999 to 2002. During this time, he performed at various live music venues in Cambridge with early iterations of Hot Chip. His musical career began seriously with the formation of Hot Chip alongside Joe Goddard while they were attending secondary school in Putney, London, an endeavor that would lead to significant recognition in the electronic music scene.

Taylor’s career encompasses his primary role as the lead vocalist, keyboardist, and guitarist for the acclaimed synth-pop band Hot Chip, which he co-founded. Beyond Hot Chip, he has developed a solo career, releasing multiple albums. His first solo album, “Rubbed Out,” was released in 2008, following Hot Chip’s second album, “The Warning.” In the same year, he co-founded the improvisational quartet About Group, featuring John Coxon, Pat Thomas, and Charles Hayward. This period marked a diversification of his musical output, exploring different genres and collaborative formats.

His solo discography further expanded with releases like the EP “Nayim From the Halfway Line” in 2012 and the album “Await Barbarians” in 2014, both on Domino Recording Company. Taylor continued his solo work with “Piano” in 2016 and its companion album “Listen With(out) Piano” in 2017, which featured re-works of tracks with additional musicians. In 2018, he released “Beautiful Thing,” produced by Tim Goldsworthy. His album “Silence” followed in 2021, with singles leading up to its release, demonstrating a consistent output of original material and collaborations. He has also collaborated with visual artists and other musicians, including Green Gartside of Scritti Politti and Cologne house producer Justus Köhncke, forming the duo Fainting By Numbers.
