38 Special has maintained a dynamic presence in rock music for decades, consistently delivering their signature blend of Southern and arena rock to audiences globally, and releasing their first studio album in over twenty years in 2025. After a pivotal musical shift in the early 1980s, 38 Special achieved significant chart success, transitioning from their Southern rock roots to an accessible, guitar-driven arena rock sound. The band, formed in 1974, signed with A&M Records, releasing their self-titled debut album in May 1977, followed by Special Delivery in March 1978. Their evolving sound, championed by Don Barnes on lead vocals and frequent songwriting collaborations with Jim Peterik, produced a string of hit singles including ‘Hold On Loosely’ (1981) and ‘Caught Up in You’ (1982), which achieved significant chart success on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Rock Tracks chart.

In 2013, Donnie Van Zant retired from touring, leaving Don Barnes as the primary leader, who continued to guide the band through ongoing performances. The group recently announced their highly anticipated new studio album, Milestone, set for release in 2025, marking their first new studio material in over two decades. This release will coincide with a major ’50 Year Legacy Tour,’ celebrating their enduring presence and impact on rock music.
