Adam Cohen was born on September 18, 1972, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The son of artist Leonard Cohen, he spent his early years in various locations including Paris, the south of France, the Greek island of Hydra, Greenwich Village, and Los Angeles. By age 12, he was self-taught on guitar, drums, and piano, developing a serious interest in music by 15. In 1990, he worked as a roadie before studying international relations at Syracuse University. He eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1996 to pursue his music career after performing in bands in New York City. His skills as a songwriter, singer, guitarist, and keyboardist led to a bidding war among record labels, culminating in a contract with Sony Music’s Columbia Records in 1996.
Cohen’s debut album, “Adam Cohen,” was released in 1998 and received positive critical attention, producing the radio hit “Cry Ophelia.” Despite critical acclaim, the album did not achieve significant commercial success. Following this, Cohen shifted his focus to French-language material, releasing “Mélancolista” in 2004 through Capitol Records Canada. This album featured a duet with French actress Virginie Ledoyen on the song “Happiness.” Later, he joined the Los Angeles-based band The Low Millions, serving as their lead singer and featuring on their debut album, “Ex-Girlfriends,” released in 2005. The Low Millions achieved two charting hits on AAA radio in North America with “Eleanor” and “Statue.
After a period of disillusionment with the music industry, culminating in 2007, Cohen returned with new solo material. His album “Like A Man” was released in 2011, followed by “We Go Home” in 2014. These albums marked a turning point in his career, as he aimed to create music that was more authentically his own. In a significant collaboration with his father, Adam produced and performed on Leonard Cohen’s 2016 album, “You Want It Darker.” He continued this work posthumously, producing and compiling his father’s 2019 album, “Thanks for the Dance,” solidifying his role in preserving and expanding his family’s musical legacy.
