United States Alex Varkatzas is a musician known for his work as the former lead vocalist of the metalcore band Atreyu and as a member of Dead Icarus and I Am War.
A collaboration among Varkatzas, known for his tenure as the frontman of ATREYU, guitarist and producer Gabe Mangold of ENTERPRISE EARTH. Alex Varkatzas's new band released their 2024-released album 'Ad Infernum'.
The collaboration began when Varkatzas emailed Schieppati about his idea of doing an album of aggressive and brutal music. This project featured members of Atreyu and Bleeding Through.
Alex Varkatzas was the former frontman of Atreyu, a metalcore band. He boasted in 2018 that the band had essentially invented the genre of metalcore.

Alex Varkatzas, born on January 17, 1982, is an American musician recognized for his significant contributions to the metalcore genre. His musical journey began at the age of 14 when he co-founded the punk band Retribution with Dan Jacobs and Brandon Saller. By 1998, this group evolved into Atreyu, developing a heavier sound under the new name. Atreyu released their independent work, “Visions,” in 1998, followed by the EP “Fractures in the Facade of Your Porcelain Beauty” in 2001. This EP led to a signing with Victory Records, and the release of their debut album, “Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses,” in 2002. Over the next decade, Atreyu released four more albums: “The Curse” (2004), “A Death-Grip on Yesterday” (2006), “Lead Sails Paper Anchor” (2007), and “Congregation of the Damned” (2009).
Following a hiatus, Atreyu announced their return in 2014, performing at festivals such as Aftershock and Slipknot’s Knotfest. They released the album “Long Live” in 2015 and “In Our Wake” in 2018, which included singles like “Super Hero” featuring Aaron Gillespie and M. Shadows. In 2020, Varkatzas officially departed from Atreyu.
During Atreyu’s hiatus in 2011, Varkatzas collaborated with Brandan Schieppati of Bleeding Through to form the hardcore project I Am War, releasing the album “Outlive You All” in 2012. More recently, in June 2021, Varkatzas announced his new band, Dead Icarus. Dead Icarus released their debut single “Sellout” in August 2023 under MNRK Heavy, followed by the EP “Ad Infernum” in March 2024 and their debut studio album “ZEALOT” in October 2024. The band features Gabe Mangold of Enterprise Earth and Brandon Zackey of Whitechapel.
