Performance Designed Products released Aly & AJ-designed guitars on November 10, 2008. Aly's guitar featured a heart-and-crossbones print (PlayStation 2) and AJ's guitar was in the shape of the Aly & AJ heart logo with zebra print (Wii, PS2).
Aly & AJ, also known as 78violet for a period, originated in Torrance, California, and gained prominence after signing with Hollywood Records in 2004. Their debut album, “Into the Rush,” was released in 2005 and achieved RIAA Gold certification. This album included singles such as “Rush” and “Chemicals React.” They continued their musical output with “Acoustic Hearts of Winter” in 2006 and “Insomniatic” in 2007. The latter featured the Platinum-certified single “Potential Breakup Song,” which became a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. During this time, they also opened for the Cheetah Girls on their 2005 Christmas tour and Miley Cyrus on her Best of Both Worlds Tour in 2007.
After departing from Hollywood Records in 2010 and briefly performing as 78violet, releasing the single “Hothouse” in 2013, the duo returned to their original name, Aly & AJ, in 2015. Their return to music included the extended plays “Ten Years” (2017) and “Sanctuary” (2019), followed by studio albums such as “A Touch of the Beat Gets You Up on Your Feet Gets You Out and Then Into the Sun” (2021), “With Love From” (2023), and the upcoming “Silver Deliverer” (2025). They performed at Lollapalooza in 2021 and Austin City Limits in 2022.
Beyond their musical endeavors, Aly & AJ have utilized their platform for activism, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, voter registration, Black Lives Matter, and Planned Parenthood. They have partnered with organizations like HeadCount and The Trevor Project, and have spoken publicly about mental health struggles. Both sisters have also pursued acting careers, appearing together in the Disney Channel movie “Cow Belles” (2006) and the independent film “Weepah Way for Now” (2015). They have also been involved in branded merchandise, including Aly & AJ Hello Kitty dolls and “The Aly & AJ Adventure” game for Nintendo DS.
