Anthony Jamar Brown, born on October 22, 1981, in Baltimore, Maryland, displayed musical aptitude from an early age, reportedly playing Pachelbel’s Canon by ear on the piano at three. Before his focus on gospel music, Brown explored other musical paths, including performing John Legend covers. His career in gospel began to solidify when he became the Assistant Minister of Music at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in 2008, where he later assumed the role of worship leader. His songwriting talents gained early recognition with the 2009 release of “It Ain’t Over,” which became a number one gospel hit for Maurette Brown Clark.
Anthony Brown & group therAPy released their self-titled debut album on August 21, 2012, through Tyscot Records. The album was produced by Brown and Justin Savage and was a breakthrough, charting on the Billboard 200, Top Gospel Albums, and Independent Albums charts. This debut earned them 11 Stellar Award nominations and a Dove Award nomination, with the band winning two Stellar Awards for Best Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year and Best Group Duo of the Year. The album featured the number one song “Testimony,” which Billboard Magazine recognized as the longest-running Top 10 Gospel Radio Single in 2013.
The group’s second album, “Everyday Jesus,” released in 2015, brought further critical acclaim, including Anthony’s first Grammy Award nomination, three Billboard Music Award nominations, and a BET Award nomination. In 2017, Anthony Brown & group therAPy made history at the Stellar Awards by winning a record-breaking 10 awards in a single ceremony, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Worth.” This song spent over 27 weeks as the number one gospel single and topped the gospel digital singles chart, becoming one of the genre’s most significant tracks. Their third album, “A Long Way From Sunday,” released on July 28, 2017, debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums Chart, featuring popular tracks like “Trust In You,” “Every Time,” and “I Got That.” The group has performed on national platforms such as BET, TBN, TV One, Essence Festival, Bishop T.D.
