Amon Amarth, a melodic death metal band originating from Tumba, Sweden, formed in 1992. The band adopted its name from the Sindarin term for Mount Doom in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Their musical style is characterized by melodic death metal, while their lyrical content primarily revolves around Viking mythology and history. This thematic focus led to the band often being labeled “Viking metal,” though they identify primarily with the melodic death metal genre. The current lineup consists of lead guitarist Olavi Mikkonen, vocalist Johan Hegg, bassist Ted Lundström, rhythm guitarist Johan Söderberg, and drummer Jocke Wallgren.
The band’s career began with early recordings and demos after forming from the grindcore band Scum. This early period included the 1993 demo “Thor Arise” and the 1994 demo “The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter.” In 1996, they signed with Pulverised Records, releasing their MCD “Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds,” which sold 6,000 copies. Their breakthrough came with signing to Metal Blade Records, leading to their debut album, “Once Sent from the Golden Hall,” in 1998. This album established their distinctive sound, combining heavy riff work, melodic elements, and narrative lyrics. The band transitioned through lineup changes in the late 1990s, with Johan Söderberg joining on rhythm guitar and Fredrik Andersson on drums.
Over the subsequent decades, Amon Amarth consistently released material and toured extensively. Notable albums include “The Avenger” (1999), “The Crusher” (2001), and “Versus The World” (2002). The band achieved significant international recognition with “Twilight of the Thunder God” in 2008, which charted successfully in Sweden, Germany, Finland, and the US Billboard 200. Further albums like “Surtur Rising” (2011), “Deceiver of the Gods” (2013), “Jomsviking” (2016), “Berserker” (2019), and “The Great Heathen Army” (2022) solidified their global standing. In 2015, drummer Fredrik Andersson departed, and Jocke Wallgren joined in 2016. The band continues to record and tour, with their thirteenth studio album, “The Allfather Awakens,” announced for release in October 2026.
