Band-Maid, a Japanese rock band, was formed in 2013, bringing together members Miku Kobato (rhythm guitar, backing and lead vocals), Saiki Atsumi (lead vocals), Kanami Tōno (lead guitar, backing vocals), Misa (bass, backing vocals), and Akane Hirose (drums, percussion). The band’s concept originated from Miku Kobato’s experience working in maid cafés, leading to their signature look of maid costumes contrasted with their aggressive musical style. Their live performances, referred to as “servings,” include unique audience interactions, such as the “Omajinai-Time” featuring comedic elements and calls inspired by maid cafés and anime.
The group quickly established a presence in Tokyo’s live music scene, releasing their debut mini-album “Maid in Japan” in January 2014, followed by the maxi-single “Ai to Jōnetsu no Matador” later that year. Their international recognition began in April 2015, notably after their music video for “Thrill” gained significant traction online. This led to their first overseas performance at Sakura-Con in Seattle, Washington, in March 2016, marking a turning point in their career as they began to attract a global fanbase. They subsequently embarked on their first world tour in October and November 2016, visiting Mexico, Hong Kong, and European countries.
Band-Maid has continued to expand its global reach and musical output. In 2021, they made a cameo appearance in the Netflix film “Kate” and had their songs “Blooming” and “Choose Me” featured in the movie. Their track “Choose Me” was also used in the US TV series “Peacemaker.” The band has collaborated with notable artists such as Mike Einziger of Incubus, co-writing the song “Bestie” in 2024, and performed with Mexican rock band The Warning, releasing the collaborative song “Show Them” in August 2024. These partnerships demonstrate their versatility and growing influence beyond Japan.
