Band of Horses was formed in 2004 in Seattle, Washington, by singer-songwriter Ben Bridwell. Initially known briefly as Horses, the group gained attention from Sub Pop after performing as an opening act for Iron & Wine. In 2005, the band released the ‘Tour EP,’ which was distributed at shows and through Sub Pop’s website. Their debut full-length album, ‘Everything All the Time,’ was recorded in 2005 with producer Phil Ek and released on March 21, 2006. This album included new versions of songs from their EP and was a minor commercial success in Scandinavia.
Following personnel changes, including the departure of initial members and the addition of Creighton Barrett on drums, the band established a touring lineup that contributed to their second album. In 2007, Bridwell relocated the band to his native South Carolina. Their second album, ‘Cease to Begin,’ was recorded in Asheville, North Carolina, and released on October 9, 2007, through Sub Pop Records. This album marked their first appearance on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, reaching number 35, and also charted in several European countries. The single “No One’s Gonna Love You” became their first European hit single.
The period between 2007 and 2017 saw a stable lineup with Tyler Ramsey on guitar and Bill Reynolds on bass. During this time, they released ‘Infinite Arms’ in 2010, which debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy Award nomination in 2011 for Best Alternative Album. This era also included the release of ‘Mirage Rock’ in 2012 and the live album ‘Acoustic at the Ryman’ in 2014. The band continued to tour extensively and later released ‘Why Are You OK’ in 2016. In 2022, they released their sixth studio album, ‘Things Are Great,’ followed by ‘Acoustic At The Ryman Vol. 2’ in 2024.
