About

James Beaumont, born on October 21, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was an American singer and songwriter. He became widely recognized as the lead vocalist of The Skyliners, a doo-wop group formed in Pittsburgh. The original lineup of The Skyliners included Jimmy Beaumont as lead, Janet Vogel Rapp on soprano, Wally Lester on tenor, Jackie Taylor as bass voice and guitarist, and Joe Verscharen on baritone. The group gained prominence with their 1959 hit “Since I Don’t Have You,” a song that has been acknowledged for its influence by notable figures in music, including producer Phil Spector and Stevie Wonder.

His career with The Skyliners saw several milestones, including top 40 hits with “This I Swear” and “Pennies from Heaven.” Other significant releases included “It Happened Today” (1959), “Close Your Eyes” (1961), and “Comes Love” (1962). The group underwent changes throughout its tenure, with the original lineup dissolving in 1963 and then reuniting eleven years later without Jackie Taylor. In 1965, Beaumont also pursued a solo career, recording singles for the Bang label such as “Tell Me” and “I Feel Like I’m Falling in Love.” These solo tracks, including “You Got Too Much Going for You” and “I Never Loved Her Anyway,” are now considered Northern Soul collectibles.

The Skyliners, with Beaumont as lead, continued to perform and record. In 1978, Detroit-based producer Don Davis produced their “comeback” album for RCA subsidiary, Tortoise International Records, which included tracks like “Oh, How Happy” and “The Love Bug.” Beaumont remained active with The Skyliners until his passing on October 7, 2017, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, at the age of 76. His contributions to music were recognized with The Skyliners’ induction into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
