Karen Jill Elson, born on January 14, 1979, in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England, embarked on her modeling career at the age of 16 after being discovered by Boss Model Management. Her international breakthrough occurred on her 18th birthday when Steven Meisel photographed her for the cover of Italian Vogue. This marked the beginning of a successful modeling journey, collaborating with renowned photographers such as Arthur Elgort, Bruce Weber, and Mario Testino. Elson has graced the runways for prominent designers including Marc Jacobs, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and Versace. She holds over 30 magazine covers, including international editions of Vogue, W, and Harper’s Bazaar. Her contributions to the fashion industry were recognized with the Model of the Year title at the VH1 Fashion Awards in 1997 and the British Fashion Award for Best Model in 2005. She has also been featured in advertising campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, and Burberry.
Beyond her modeling achievements, Elson has developed a music career as a singer-songwriter. She is a founding member of The Citizens Band, a New York-based political cabaret troupe that began performing in 2004, where her vocal abilities garnered positive critical attention. In 2010, Elson released her debut solo album, ‘The Ghost Who Walks,’ through Third Man Records, receiving favorable reviews that compared her voice to Jenny Lewis and Loretta Lynn. She continued to release music with her second solo album, ‘Double Roses,’ in 2017, and ‘Green’ in 2022. Her music has been featured in television series like HBO’s ‘True Blood’ and ‘Fringe.’ Elson also performed at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony as one of eight British models, wearing a gold gown by Burberry.
Elson has extended her creative endeavors into design, launching her own line of shoes, bags, and jewelry for fashion brand Nine West. She is an ambassador for Save the Children, advocating for child rights and traveling to regions such as Sierra Leone, the Middle East, and the Ivory Coast for this cause. In 2020, she published her autobiography, ‘The Red Flame,’ detailing personal and professional experiences. Elson balances her professional life with her role as a mother of two children, Scarlett Teresa White and Henry Lee White, and resides in Nashville, Tennessee. She married Electric Lady Studios owner Lee Foster in 2024.
