About

Jason Douglas Newman, known as Brother Ali, was born on July 30, 1977, in Madison, Wisconsin. He relocated with his family to Michigan for a period before settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1992, where he attended Robbinsdale Cooper High School. Diagnosed with albinism, a condition affecting pigment, he found solidarity and acceptance among Black classmates, noting that their interactions, while sometimes teasing, lacked the exclusionary nature he experienced from white peers. His musical journey began early, with rapping starting at age eight, heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and artists such as Rakim, Chuck D, and KRS-One. This early immersion in hip-hop laid the groundwork for his distinctive artistic voice.

Brother Ali’s professional career began to take shape with the release of his debut album, “Rites of Passage,” in 2000 under Rhymesayers Entertainment. This marked the beginning of a prolific period that would see him release eight critically acclaimed albums and several EPs. His music is characterized by deeply personal narratives, social commentary, and themes of hope and resilience. Notable albums include “Shadows on the Sun” (2003), “The Undisputed Truth” (2007), which garnered significant attention for its critique of the United States political system, and “Us” (2009). His work has earned him features in publications such as Rolling Stone and Source Magazine, and he has appeared on television programs including “The Late Late Show” (2007), “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” (2007), and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” (2009).

Beyond his musical achievements, Brother Ali is a vocal activist and community leader. His activism often focuses on racial inequality and government critique, leading to incidents such as a money transfer to his record label being frozen by the Department of Homeland Security in 2007 following the release of his “Uncle Sam Goddamn” music video. In 2012, he was arrested for civil disobedience during an Occupy protest, using the event to highlight issues of housing foreclosure. His commitment to social justice extends to lecturing at universities like Princeton and Stanford and delivering keynote addresses at events such as the Nobel Peace Prize Forum. He also co-founded The Gemali Project to support Muslim converts and spiritual seekers, reflecting his personal conversion to Islam at age 15, influenced by KRS-One.
