About

Johanna Charlotte Wessels, born on May 13, 1987, is a Dutch singer and songwriter known for her contributions to the symphonic metal genre. Her musical journey began with training in both jazz and classical singing. Around the age of fifteen or sixteen, Wessels joined the gothic metal band To Elysium, where her parents had to sign contracts due to her age, demonstrating her early commitment to music. This early experience laid the groundwork for her extensive career in the metal scene.

In 2004, Wessels became involved with Martijn Westerholt, formerly of Within Temptation, which led to her joining Delain. Initially conceived as a studio project, Wessels’ role expanded as she became the lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the band. Delain signed with Roadrunner Records in 2005, and Wessels remained with the band for nearly 17 years, contributing significantly to their discography which includes six studio albums: ‘Lucidity’ (2006), ‘April Rain’ (2009), ‘We Are the Others’ (2012), ‘The Human Contradiction’ (2014), ‘Moonbathers’ (2016), and ‘Apocalypse & Chill’ (2020). Her time with Delain involved extensive touring and numerous performances at major festivals. In 2015, Wessels co-founded the symphonic rock group Phantasma with Georg Neuhauser and Oliver Philipps, releasing the concept album ‘The Deviant Hearts’ and her debut novella.

Wessels departed from Delain in February 2021 to embark on a solo career, citing “built up grievances” as a factor in her decision. She quickly transitioned to releasing solo material, starting with the single “Soft Revolution” in January 2021. Her solo artistic output includes the albums ‘Tales from Six Feet Under’ (2021) and ‘Tales from Six Feet Under, Vol. II’ (2022), both written, produced, and performed from her home studio. Her third solo album, ‘The Obsession,’ was released in September 2024, supported by several singles. Throughout her career, Wessels has collaborated with other artists such as Alissa White-Gluz and Epica, and remains active in the music industry, utilizing platforms like Patreon for independent creation.
