About

Daniel Quine Auerbach was born on May 14, 1979, in Wooster, Ohio. Growing up in a family with musical roots and influenced by blues artists like Junior Kimbrough, Robert Johnson, and R.L. Burnside, Auerbach developed an early passion for music. He attended the University of Akron, but his dedication to guitar and blues led him to leave college to pursue music more seriously. Before co-founding The Black Keys, he was part of The Barnburners, a blues-based band that played in Northeast Ohio clubs and released “The Rawboogie EP”. This early experience laid the groundwork for his future endeavors in the music industry.

Auerbach’s most significant work began with The Black Keys, formed in 2001 with drummer Patrick Carney in Akron, Ohio. The duo initially focused on recording projects, releasing their debut album “The Big Come Up” in 2002. They continued to self-produce their first four records in makeshift studios, culminating in critical acclaim for their 2004 album “Rubber Factory.” Their commercial breakthrough arrived in 2010 with the album “Brothers” and its hit single “Tighten Up,” which sold millions of copies and garnered three Grammy Awards. The follow-up album, “El Camino” (2011), was equally successful, earning three Grammy Awards and leading to their first arena tour. After a hiatus following their 2014 number-one album “Turn Blue,” The Black Keys returned in 2019 with “Let’s Rock” and have continued releasing successful albums.

Beyond The Black Keys, Auerbach has established himself as a prominent producer. He owns Easy Eye Sound recording studio and a record label of the same name in Nashville, Tennessee. He has produced records for a diverse range of artists including Dr. John, Lana Del Rey, CeeLo Green, Cage the Elephant, and The Pretenders. His production work has earned him significant recognition, including the 2013 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, and further nominations in 2020, 2021, and 2023. Additionally, Auerbach formed the side project The Arcs, releasing “Yours, Dreamily,” in 2015 and “Electrophonic Chronic” in 2023, showcasing his versatility as an artist.
