About

Jon Brion was born on December 11, 1963, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. His upbringing was immersed in music, with his mother, LaRue, being a singer and his father, Keith Brion, a band director at Yale. His early career began in New Haven, Connecticut, where he co-formed the band The Bats in the early 1980s. The Bats released a single “Popgun” and an album, “How Pop Can You Get?” (1982). After the band disbanded, Brion relocated to Boston in 1987, performing solo and briefly forming World’s Fair. He later joined the touring lineup of Aimee Mann’s band, ‘Til Tuesday.

Brion transitioned from session musician to a significant figure in music production and film scoring. He contributed guitar work to Jellyfish’s 1993 album “Spilt Milk” and played on The Wallflowers’ hit song “One Headlight.” His production career began with Aimee Mann’s solo debut, “Whatever” (1993), and its follow-up, “I’m With Stupid.” He has since produced for a diverse range of artists including Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright, Elliott Smith, Robyn Hitchcock, and Kanye West, notably co-executive producing West’s 2005 album “Late Registration.” In 2001, he released his debut solo album, “Meaningless.”

As a film composer, Brion has established a strong reputation, frequently collaborating with director Paul Thomas Anderson on films such as “Hard Eight” (1996), “Magnolia” (1999), and “Punch-Drunk Love” (2002). His work on Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) and Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York” (2008) also garnered critical acclaim. He has received Grammy Award nominations for Best Score Soundtrack Album for “Magnolia” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” His filmography includes a wide array of projects, encompassing comedies, animated features, and dramas, demonstrating his versatility and consistent demand in the industry.
