Daniel Powter

Daniel Richard Powter was born on February 25, 1971, in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. His musical journey began early, learning violin at age four, and transitioning to piano at sixteen. He attended MacEwan University but left to focus on music. In his late twenties, Powter partnered with producer Jeff Dawson, leading to the release of his debut album, “I’m Your Betty,” on June 21, 2000, through Outside Music. This initial release featured songs like “More Than I” and “Negative Fashion” and saw some tracks used in the Canadian television series “Higher Ground.”

Powter’s breakthrough came with his 2005 self-titled album, notably featuring the single “Bad Day.” He conceived the song’s hook during a ferry trip in British Columbia. After drawing interest from various music labels, he signed with Warner Bros. Music. In mid-2005, “Bad Day” was released in Europe and gained significant traction when Coca-Cola used it in an ad campaign, leading to widespread airplay and high chart positions across Europe. In the United States, the song became widely recognized after its extensive use on the television series “American Idol” in its fifth season, where Powter performed it live during the finale on May 23, 2006. “Bad Day” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Adult Top 40, and Adult Contemporary charts, making him the first solo Canadian male artist to achieve this since Bryan Adams in 1995. This success earned him a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2006 and a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance nomination at the 49th Grammy Awards. Despite the widespread success of “Bad Day,” subsequent singles from the album, such as “Jimmy Gets High,” “Free Loop,” and “Lie to Me,” did not achieve the same level of chart success.

After a period of extensive touring and releases, including his third album, “Under the Radar,” in 2008 and a greatest hits album, “Best of Me,” in 2010, Powter took a hiatus in 2011 to focus on family. He returned in 2012 with the single “Cupid” and the album “Turn On the Lights,” followed by “Crazy All My Life,” which performed well in Canada and Russia. Over the years, he has continued to release singles and albums, including “Giants” in 2018, and has engaged in various collaborations with international artists like J-pop singer ReoNa, The Untamed Boys, and Ayaka Hirahara. In 2024, Powter appeared on the fourth season of “Canada’s Got Talent,” marking his first Canadian television performance.
