John William Grant, born on July 25, 1968, in Buchanan, Michigan, is an American singer, musician, and songwriter who also holds Icelandic citizenship. His early life involved a conservative upbringing and a move to Parker, Colorado, at age 12, where he experienced bullying. These personal challenges and his discovery of his sexuality significantly influenced his later lyrical themes. In 1988, Grant moved to Germany to study languages, exposing him to new musical genres.
Grant co-founded the Denver-based alternative rock band The Czars in 1994, serving as its lead singer, pianist, and primary songwriter. The band released six studio albums between 1994 and 2006, achieving critical success although commercial recognition was limited. After The Czars disbanded in 2006, Grant took a four-year hiatus, working various jobs in New York City, including as a waiter and a medical interpreter. During this period, he also began confronting his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, which had been present during his time with The Czars.
His solo career began in 2010 with the release of “Queen of Denmark,” which was produced with the help of the Texan folk rock group Midlake. This album received critical acclaim, being named Album of the Year by Mojo magazine. Subsequent albums, “Pale Green Ghosts” (2013), “Grey Tickles, Black Pressure” (2015), “Love Is Magic” (2018), “Boy from Michigan” (2021), and “The Art of the Lie” (2024), continued to garner widespread critical attention and commercial success, with several charting in the UK. Grant moved to Reykjavík, Iceland, in 2013 and became an Icelandic citizen in 2022, a country that has influenced his musical direction and personal life. He is also known for collaborations with artists such as Sinéad O’Connor, Elton John, and Kylie Minogue, and as a member of the side project Creep Show. In 2012, Grant publicly revealed his HIV-positive diagnosis. His work often explores themes of identity, sexuality, and personal struggles with honesty and wit.
