Dark Funeral was founded in 1993 in Stockholm, Sweden, by guitarists David Parland (Blackmoon) and Mikael Svanberg (Lord Ahriman). The band emerged during the second wave of black metal, focusing on a raw and intense sound without relying on synthesizers. Their early lineup included Paul Mäkitalo (Themgoroth) on bass and vocals, and Joel Andersson (Draugen) on drums. In January 1994, the band recorded their self-titled EP at Unisound Studio with producer Dan Swanö, which was released on May 4, 1994. On the same day, they performed their first live show in Oslo, Norway. Draugen departed after the EP recording and was replaced by Equimanthorn.
In 1995, Dark Funeral signed with No Fashion Records and began working on their debut full-length album. They initially recorded at Unisound Studio but re-recorded the album, “The Secrets of the Black Arts,” at The Abyss Studio with Peter Tägtgren, incorporating additional material. Emperor Magus Caligula joined as vocalist, replacing Themgoroth, prior to the album’s release on January 28, 1996. The band expanded its reach through licensing deals in North America with Metal Blade and Mystic Productions in Poland. Over the years, Dark Funeral has undergone several personnel changes, while continuing to release new material and tour. Their musical style consistently explores themes of Satanism, anti-Christianity, the underworld, eschatology, hatred, misanthropy, theistic Satanism, and black magic.
The band has released seven full-length albums, with their most recent, “We Are the Apocalypse,” issued on March 18, 2022. This album, mixed by Daniel Bergstrand and mastered by Paul Logus, includes tracks such as “Nightfall,” “Let The Devil In,” and “Leviathan.” Dark Funeral has maintained an active touring schedule throughout its career, performing at festivals and undertaking tours across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. They have also engaged in legal actions, notably winning a dispute with MNW/No Fashion Records regarding royalties for their back-catalogue in 2008.
