Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit formed in San Diego, California, in 2005. The founding members, Jonathan Jameson (bass), Brandon Young (drums), and Matthew Logan Vasquez (vocals and guitars), connected through their shared musical interests. Young first encountered Vasquez performing on a bench in San Diego. Kelly Winrich (multi-instrumentalist) joined the band shortly thereafter, having been a close friend of Vasquez since they were 18. The band’s early work included recording their debut EP, “I Think I’ve Found It,” at Winrich’s home studio, which Monarchy Music later released in 2006 on CD and 12-inch vinyl.

In late 2007, Delta Spirit independently released their debut album, “Ode to Sunshine,” which they produced and recorded in a cabin in Julian, California. Rounder Records re-released this album in August 2008. The band gained national exposure through numerous television appearances, including “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in 2008 and “Last Call with Carson Daly” in March 2009. Their second album, “History From Below,” released in June 2010, drew inspiration from historian Howard Zinn. This period also saw them perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Jools Holland,” and undertake two US tours and one European tour in 2010-2011. William McLaren (guitar) officially joined Delta Spirit in 2011.

The band’s third studio album, the self-titled “Delta Spirit,” was released in March 2012, recorded in West Hurley, New York, with producer Chris Coady. In 2014, Delta Spirit moved to Dualtone Records and released “Into the Wide,” produced by Ben Allen. This album achieved the band’s highest chart positions to date in the United States and was promoted with a performance on “Late Show with David Letterman.” Their music has been featured in television series such as “Friday Night Lights,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “The Walking Dead” soundtrack, as well as the 2013 film “Warm Bodies” and an episode of “American Dad!”
