Home Free was founded in January 2001 in Mankato, Minnesota, by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp, along with Matt Atwood. Initially a hobby for its members, the group steadily gained experience and popularity, allowing them to pursue music full-time by 2007. Early on, the lineup saw various changes, but the core of the Rupp brothers and Atwood remained. Rob Lundquist joined the group in 2008. The addition of Tim Foust in January 2012, known for his sub-harmonic bass, and Austin Brown in January 2013 as lead tenor, further solidified their sound and allowed them to transition into a country a cappella style that resonated with wider audiences.
The group achieved national prominence after winning the fourth season of NBC’s “The Sing-Off” in 2013, performing an arrangement of Hunter Hayes’s “I Want Crazy.” This victory earned them $100,000 and a recording contract with Sony. Their first major label album, “Crazy Life,” was released in February 2014, marking a significant milestone in their career. Following this success, Home Free has released multiple albums, with “So Long Dixie” (2022) reaching number one on Billboard’s Current Country Albums chart. Their continued output includes “As Seen On TV” (2023) and “Crazy(er) Life” (2024), demonstrating consistent activity in recording and touring nationally.
