About

Prairie Oyster originated in Toronto, Ontario, in 1975, initially as a trio composed of lead singer/bassist Russell de Carle, guitarist Keith Glass, and steel guitar player Denis Delorme. This early formation toured and made television appearances, but did not release any recordings before disbanding in 1978. The group reformed in 1982, expanding their lineup to include fiddler John P. Allen, keyboardist/songwriter Joan Besen, and drummer John Adames, who was later replaced by Bruce Moffett in 1986. After these additions, the band recorded their debut album, “Oyster Tracks.” Demos from the group were eventually presented to RCA executive Joe Galante in Nashville, leading to a recording contract after he observed a live performance.

Their first album with RCA, “Different Kind of Fire,” was released in 1990 in both Canada and the United States. The album produced the single “Goodbye, So Long, Hello,” which reached the Top 70 on the U.S. country charts and significantly contributed to their early Canadian success. Prairie Oyster continued to receive recognition for their subsequent albums, including “Everybody Knows” (1991) and “Only One Moon” (1994). Their career highlights include multiple number one country singles in Canada, with an additional twelve singles reaching the Canadian Country Top 10. Eight of their albums have achieved gold or platinum certification in Canada.

Throughout the 1990s, Prairie Oyster consistently received awards, including six Juno Awards for Best Country Group or Duo and ten Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards, such as six ‘Group/Duo of the Year’ honors and an ‘Entertainer of the Year’ award. They were also recognized with the Bud Country Fans’ Choice Award in 1994 and a SOCAN National Achievement Award in 2011. In 2008, Prairie Oyster was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, acknowledging their lasting impact on Canadian country music. While the band is no longer actively touring as a unit, individual members like Russell de Carle and Keith Glass have pursued solo projects and collaborations, further contributing to the music landscape.
