Ian Thomas Ball was born on October 19, 1975, in Southport, Merseyside, England. He became prominent as a member of the indie rock band Gomez, where he shares lead vocals and guitar responsibilities. The band was formed in 1996 with fellow members Ben Ottewell, Tom Gray, Paul Blackburn, and Olly Peacock. Gomez signed with Hut Records and released their debut album, “Bring It On,” which achieved platinum status in the UK by selling over 300,000 copies.
Ball has maintained an active career in music since the 1990s, expanding beyond Gomez with solo work and collaborative efforts. He released his first solo album, “Who Goes There,” in 2007 through his label, Dispensary Records. A second solo album, “Unfold Yourself,” followed in 2013. His work has also included involvement in the 14-piece supergroup Operation Aloha, alongside Gomez member Olly Peacock, further diversifying his musical contributions.
His career progression includes relocating to Los Angeles after the release of Gomez’s 2002 album “In Our Gun.” Despite the geographic shift, he continued to tour and record with Gomez, releasing albums such as “Split the Difference” (2004), “Out West” (2005), and “How We Operate” (2006). He also explored electronica with Lionel 6, an experimental trio, and produced albums for the Australian band Gelbison, including “1704” and “See the World.”
