The Chainsmokers, an electronic DJ and production duo composed of Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, formed in 2012. Initially, they gained recognition by releasing remixes of songs by independent artists. Their breakthrough came in 2014 with the song “#Selfie,” which became a top-twenty single internationally and peaked on the Dance/Electronic Songs chart. This success led to their signing with Disruptor Records, a joint venture label with Sony Music Entertainment, in April 2015. Their debut EP, “Bouquet,” released in October 2015, featured the commercially successful single “Roses,” which reached the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and achieved multiplatinum certification.
Continuing their career progression, The Chainsmokers released “Don’t Let Me Down” in February 2016, featuring Daya, which earned them a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Their single “Closer,” featuring Halsey, became their first number-one hit on the U.S. Billboard chart in July 2016. In October 2016, they were ranked 18th on DJ Magazine’s “Top 100 DJs” list. Their debut studio album, “Memories…Do Not Open,” released in April 2017, topped the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by August 2017. Their second album, “Sick Boy,” was released in December 2018, followed by “World War Joy” in December 2019, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart. In 2019, Forbes listed them as the highest-paid DJs.
Beyond their musical endeavors, Pall and Taggart have expanded into venture capital, founding Mantis VC, which raised $110 million in 2020 and 2021. They also established Kick the Habit Productions, a film production company. After a hiatus from social media in 2020 to focus on new music, they released their fourth studio album, “So Far So Good,” in May 2022, and their fifth, “Summertime Friends,” in October 2023. In 2024, they released their third EP, “No Hard Feelings,” continuing to blur the lines between indie, pop, dance, and hip-hop music.
