Joseph Satriani was born on July 15, 1956, in Westbury, New York, to a family of Italian descent. He was inspired to pursue guitar at age 14 following the death of Jimi Hendrix. In his early career, Satriani worked as a guitar instructor, teaching notable future guitarists such as Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and Larry LaLonde of Primus. In 1978, he relocated to Berkeley, California, to further his musical career, continuing to teach guitar to various students.
Satriani began his solo music career in the mid-1980s, releasing his debut album, “Not of This Earth,” in 1986. His second album, “Surfing with the Alien” (1987), achieved widespread recognition, producing radio hits and becoming a commercially successful instrumental album. Throughout his career, Satriani has collaborated with various artists and projects. He was recruited as lead guitarist for Mick Jagger’s first solo tour in 1988 and briefly toured with Deep Purple in 1993 as a replacement for Ritchie Blackmore. In 1995, Satriani founded the G3 concert tour, a rotating trio of guitarists that has featured prominent musicians like Steve Vai and John Petrucci. Since 2008, he has been the guitarist for the supergroup Chickenfoot, alongside Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony.
Over the decades, Satriani has released numerous studio albums, including “The Extremist” (1992), which achieved Gold certification in the United States and peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200. He has received 15 Grammy Award nominations and is recognized as the best-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time, with over ten million albums sold. His work often incorporates science fiction themes and has been featured in various media, including video games and television shows. Satriani continues to tour and release new music, demonstrating a career marked by technical skill and consistent artistic output.
