Sam Brown

Samantha Brown was born on October 7, 1964, in Stratford, London, England. The daughter of musician Joe Brown and session singer Vicki Brown, her introduction to the music industry began at an early age. At 14, in 1978, she provided backing vocals for the Small Faces’ album “’78 in the Shade'”. This early experience set the foundation for a career marked by diverse musical engagements, including session work with artists like Spandau Ballet and Jon Lord, before she embarked on her solo career.

Brown signed with A&M Records in 1986, leading to the release of her debut album “Stop!” in 1988. The title track became a significant hit, contributing to the album’s global sales of over two-and-a-half million copies. Her second album, “April Moon” (1990), yielded further successful singles such as “Kissing Gate” and “With a Little Love”. A turning point in her career was her third album, “43 Minutes…” (1992), released independently through her own label, Pod Music, after a dispute with A&M Records over creative control. This album, written during her mother’s illness and subsequent passing, marked a transition to more personal songwriting. Over the years, Brown has released seven studio albums, a live album, an EP, and several compilation albums, demonstrating a consistent dedication to her craft.

Beyond her solo work, Brown has maintained an active career as a backing and guest vocalist. She collaborated with Pink Floyd on their 1994 album “The Division Bell” and participated in the subsequent tour, performing as the first lead vocalist on “The Great Gig in the Sky” for the “Pulse” live recording. She has frequently toured with Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and performed “Horse to the Water” at the 2002 Concert for George, a memorial for George Harrison. In 2007, Brown faced a significant challenge with her singing voice due to a cyst on her vocal cords, which impacted her ability to perform. In response, she shifted her focus, establishing ukulele clubs in 2010 and continuing to teach, showcasing her adaptability and commitment to music education. Her most recent album, “Number 8,” was released in January 2023, marking her return to recording after a 15-year hiatus.
