Joey Purp

Joseph Davis, known professionally as Joey Purp, was born on August 3, 1993, in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up, he navigated various Chicago neighborhoods, from Wrigleyville to Humboldt Park. His early experiences included his father running a restaurant and his mother managing thrift stores. During his time at Whitney Young High School, Purp discovered his talent for freestyle rapping. Despite flunking out of high school in his senior year, he pursued his artistic passion and also gained experience working and interning at LDRS 1354, a streetwear store located in Wicker Park.

Purp’s career in music began in 2012 with the release of his first mixtape, “The Purple Tape.” He is a founding member of the Savemoney Crew, a collective that includes artists such as Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa. In 2016, he released his mixtape “iiiDrops,” which featured collaborations with Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa. This project garnered critical attention, appearing on year-end lists from publications including Complex, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone.

In 2018, Joey Purp released his debut studio album, “Quarterthing.” This album contained guest appearances from established artists like GZA and RZA. His musical reach extended beyond traditional releases when his song “Elastic” was featured in Google Chromebook advertisements in 2023. Throughout his career, Joey Purp has demonstrated a consistent output of music and collaborations, solidifying his position within the hip-hop landscape.
