Johnny Hates Jazz is a British group consisting of Clark Datchler (vocals, keyboards) and American producer-engineer Mike Nocito (bass guitar) who saw international success in the eighties with their hit single ‘Shattered Dreams’. Released on Virgin in 1987, it came after the less commercial but just as critically acclaimed single ‘Me and My Foolish Heart’ and was followed up anti-war dance track ‘I Don’t Want To Be A Hero’ and ‘Turn Back The Clock’ featuring Kim Wilde on backing vocals, both of which consolidated the band as international stars. The icing on the cake of all this was the band’s now 4 million copy selling and chart topping debut album from 1988, Turn Back The Clock.
Outside of the band, Clark has pursued a successful solo career working with the likes of Nathan East (bass / Eric Clapton), J.R. Robinson (drums / Chaka Khan) and David Rhodes (guitar / Peter Gabriel) as well as adding his production talents to music from other artists including Katrina and The Waves, Gina G, Orson and Hepburn. Mike, meanwhile, was already a highly regarded recording engineer at RAK Studios in London, and worked with artists such as Pink Floyd, The Police, The Cure and Duran Duran. October 2010 saw the band begin work on a new full length as well as a new live show that was aired at festivals across Europe and South East Asia. The same year, Clark was given a BMI award to mark the fact ‘Shattered Dreams’ picked up more than 3 million broadcast plays worldwide. Now performing at major festivals around the world, the band perform their most recent albums like 2013’s Magnetized to ever larger audiences and are now in the studio writing new songs for a new UK tour.
