Josh Kerr was born on October 8, 1997, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He started running with the Edinburgh Athletics Club at eight years old. At 17, Kerr transitioned to collegiate athletics in the United States, attending the University of New Mexico from 2015 to 2018. During his time there, Kerr secured three NCAA titles, setting a collegiate record in the 1500 meters in April 2017, a record that stood until May 2021. He notably won his first national title in the indoor mile in March 2017, triumphing over Edward Cheserek, a 15-time NCAA champion. In June 2017, Kerr won the outdoor 1500 meters, becoming the first man since Leo Manzano in 2008 to win both indoor mile and outdoor 1500m titles in the same year. He repeated his indoor mile title win in March 2018.
Kerr turned professional in June 2018, partnering with Brooks Sports and joining the Brooks Beasts Track Club under coach Danny Mackey. In August 2019, he earned a silver medal in the 1500 meters at the British Athletics Championships, which qualified him for the 2019 World Championships, where he finished sixth. In May 2021, he achieved a personal best of 1:45.74 in the 800 meters. The following month, Kerr won his first national 1500 meters title at the British Championships, securing his place on the British Olympic team. At the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, held in 2021, he earned a bronze medal in the 1500 meters with a personal best of 3:29.05. In February 2022, Kerr broke Eamonn Coghlan’s European indoor mile record, which had been unbroken since 1983, with a time of 3:48.87. En route, his 1500m split of 3:32.86 also set a new British national record for the indoor 1500m.
The year 2023 marked a significant achievement for Kerr as he won a gold medal in the 1500 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, defeating Jakob Ingebrigtsen. He concluded 2023 by winning the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile and being named Scottish Sportsperson of the Year by Sportscotland. In 2024, Kerr set a world best in the indoor 2-mile at the Millrose Games with a time of 8:00.67, surpassing Mo Farah’s previous record. He also became the World Athletics Indoor Champion in the 3000 meters in Glasgow. At the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, Kerr secured a silver medal in the 1500 meters, setting a new personal best and British national record of 3:27.79. In September 2024, he won the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City with a new course record of 3:44.3. The following year, in 2025, he became the British 5000 meters champion. In March 2026, Kerr won his second world indoor 3000 meters title in Toruń, Poland. Later that year, on July 18, 2026, he broke Hicham El Guerrouj’s 27-year-old mile world record by clocking 3:42.66 at the London Diamond League. He capped off 2026 by winning a gold medal in the mile at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
