Markus Schulz, born on February 3, 1975, in Eschwege, Germany, has established himself as a prominent figure in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene. Schulz gained early experience through a seven-year residency at The Works in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he developed his unique style. His career progressed with the release of numerous mix compilations and artist albums, including ‘Without You Near’ (2005) and ‘Progression’ (2007). He also produces under the alias Dakota, releasing albums such as ‘Thoughts Become Things’ (2009). Schulz founded Coldharbour Recordings, a record label, and Schulz Music Group (SMG), an artist management company, further solidifying his influence in the music industry.
Schulz is widely recognized for his weekly radio show, “Global DJ Broadcast,” which has aired since 2002 on platforms like Digitally Imported and ah.fm. This show has been instrumental in showcasing his signature sound and introducing new talent to a global audience. His work as a remixer has seen him collaborate with major artists, including Depeche Mode, Madonna, Everything but the Girl, and Jewel, with his remixes for Jewel’s “Intuition” and “Stand” achieving #1 positions on the Billboard club chart. His artistic output extends to seven studio albums under his own name and four under his Dakota alias, with his latest album, “The Rabbit Hole Circus,” released in 2023.
Beyond production, Schulz maintains a busy international touring schedule, performing at major festivals and clubs worldwide. He has played at events such as Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, and A State of Trance. In September 2012, DJ Times named him America’s number one DJ, a title he held again in 2014. In 2013, he formed the EDM group New World Punx with Ferry Corsten, debuting at Madison Square Garden. Schulz is known to his fans as “The Unicorn Slayer” due to his preference for specific sound frequencies in his tracks, differentiating his style from others in the trance genre.
