Karen Lee Orzolek, professionally known as Karen O, was born on November 22, 1978, in Seoul, South Korea. Her family relocated to the United States in 1980, settling in Englewood, New Jersey, where she spent her formative years and graduated from Dwight-Englewood School. She pursued higher education at Oberlin College before transferring to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Karen O rose to prominence as the lead singer of the rock band the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, where her energetic stage presence and unique vocal style became a signature element. Beyond her work with the band, she has cultivated a solo career, releasing an album and collaborating on various projects that showcase her versatility as a singer, songwriter, and musician.
Throughout her career, Karen O has achieved significant milestones, including the release of her debut solo album, “Crush Songs” in 2014, and a collaborative album, “Lux Prima,” with Danger Mouse in 2019. Her artistic reach extends to film scores, composing for notable films such as Spike Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things Are” in 2009, which earned her a Grammy Award nomination for the song “All Is Love.” She also received an Academy Award nomination for “The Moon Song” from Jonze’s 2013 film, “Her.” Her vocal contributions have enriched tracks by other artists, including The Flaming Lips, David Lynch, and Swans.
