Sierra Elizabeth Ferrell was born in Charleston, West Virginia, on August 3, 1988. Her early life involved living in a trailer with her mother and a sibling, which encouraged outdoor exploration over electronics. She initially engaged with music by playing clarinet and singing in choir, later learning guitar and performing Shania Twain covers locally. In her teens, she joined 600 lbs of Sin!, a Grateful Dead cover group that evolved into a blues and roots jam band. After a period of creative constraint, Ferrell left the band to pursue her independent musical aspirations.
In her early twenties, Ferrell adopted a nomadic lifestyle, hitch-hiking, freighthopping, and living in her van while busking in cities like Seattle and New Orleans. During this time, she embraced folk music and its various offshoots. She also navigated a period of drug addiction, experiencing several overdoses before deciding to pursue sobriety and a healthier lifestyle. These experiences ultimately influenced her musical expression and personal growth. She self-released her first two albums, “Pretty Magic Spell” in 2018 and “Washington by the Sea” in 2019, selling them while busking and posting various performances on her YouTube channel.
Her career gained significant momentum in Nashville, where she performed at Honky Tonk Tuesday’s at American Legion Post 82. This led to her discovery by producer Gary Paczosa, known for his work with Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton. With Paczosa’s assistance, Ferrell signed a three-album deal with Rounder Records in 2019. Her debut album with Rounder, “Long Time Coming,” released in August 2021, received critical acclaim and reached number 15 on the Billboard Americana/Folk Albums chart. Ferrell continued to build her career, collaborating with notable artists and releasing her fourth album, “Trail of Flowers,” in March 2024, which earned her four Grammy Awards.
