Kian Maxwell Bytyci Brownfield, known professionally as Kian, was born on July 14, 2002, in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. From an early age, Kian was immersed in music, traveling with his songwriter parents and developing a passion for singing and playing guitar. He received his first guitar at the age of seven, and by 14, he began writing his own music, marking the beginning of his professional journey. His early experiences in indigenous Australian communities with his father, a musician, influenced his musical development.
Kian made his recorded debut in 2017 at age 14, singing the chorus on Indigenous rapper Baker Boy’s debut single, “Cloud 9.” This collaboration garnered attention and laid the groundwork for his burgeoning career. In February 2018, Kian released “Too Far Gone” with Vince the Kid. Later that year, in July, he released his single “Waiting,” a song he wrote at 14 about the uncertainty of infatuation. “Waiting” quickly gained traction, leading to Kian winning Triple J’s national Unearthed High competition in August 2018. The song was added to high rotation on Triple J and also received airplay on commercial radio station Nova. In November 2018, Kian secured a recording deal with EMI Music Australia for Australia and Republic Records for international releases.
His career continued with the release of his third single, “Childism,” in February 2019, followed by his debut extended play, “Bliss,” in May 2019, which led to an Australian tour. Kian has since released several singles, including “Every Hour” (2020) and “Sunbeam” (2020), further refining his sound. In 2022, he released his second extended play, “Shine,” featuring the title track and singles like “Fit In Here” and “Direction.” He collaborated with Becca Hatch on “All of Me” in 2023. Kian’s debut studio album, “Wake Up, You’re Falling,” was released on November 1, 2024, preceded by singles such as “Try Hard,” “Regrets,” “On the Line,” and “Ultraviolet.” His emotional depth and blend of genres have earned him nominations for ARIA Music Awards and wins at the APRA Awards for “Waiting,” including Most Performed Australian Work of the Year and Most Performed Alternative Work of the Year in 2020. He has toured with established artists such as Conan Gray and Jorja Smith, and performed at festivals like The Great Escape and Laneway Festival in 2019.
