Lisa Margaret Hannigan, born on February 12, 1981, in Dublin and raised in Kilcloon, County Meath, Ireland, began her musical journey during her time at Trinity College Dublin. She met Damien Rice in 2001 and quickly became an integral part of his band, lending her distinctive vocals to his albums “O” (2002) and “9” (2006), including the hit “9 Crimes.” Hannigan toured extensively with Rice, also contributing instrumental support on guitar, bass, and drums. This period established her as a prominent vocal talent within the Irish music scene.
In 2007, Hannigan embarked on her solo career, returning to Dublin to record her debut album, “Sea Sew.” Released in September 2008, the album garnered critical acclaim, receiving favorable reviews from publications such as the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times. “Sea Sew” was nominated for the Choice Music Prize and two Meteor Music Awards in Ireland, and a Mercury Prize in the UK. Her follow-up album, “Passenger,” released in 2011, also achieved commercial success, charting at number 1 in Ireland and earning another Choice Music Prize nomination. Hannigan’s third album, “At Swim” (2016), produced by Aaron Dessner of The National, continued to receive positive reviews, praised for her vocals and songwriting.
Beyond her solo work, Hannigan has maintained a vibrant career filled with collaborations and diverse projects. She has contributed vocals to movie soundtracks like Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” (2013) and “Fury” (2014), and famously voiced the character Bronagh in the animated film “Song of the Sea” (2014) and Blue Diamond in the “Steven Universe” animated series (2017). Her voice work extended to the television film “Steven Universe: The Movie” (2019) and the follow-up series “Steven Universe Future” (2020). Hannigan has collaborated with artists such as Ray LaMontagne, Richard Hawley, Herbie Hancock, Glen Hansard, and Ed Sheeran, further cementing her reputation as a versatile and respected artist. Her contributions were recognized in 2021 when the Irish postal service, An Post, released a postage stamp celebrating her achievements.
