McKenzie Ashton Ellis, known professionally as Mothica, was born on March 12, 1995, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She began producing music at the age of 18, releasing her first song, “Starchild,” on SoundCloud, where it quickly accumulated 100,000 plays within 24 hours. In 2015, she released her EP titled “Mythic,” which featured the song “No One.” This track reached the No. 6 position on the U.S. Viral Spotify Charts, marking an early career milestone. Mothica’s musical style, which she described as “bummer pop” and dream pop for her early work, is influenced by rock and emo genres.
A significant turning point in Mothica’s career occurred in June 2020 when a TikTok video featuring her song “VICES” went viral. This exposure led to increased recognition for her music, with “VICES” reaching No. 2 on the iTunes popular music charts, surpassing “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles. The song also charted on the Billboard charts and garnered over 5,000,000 views and nearly 1,000,000 likes on TikTok. In August 2020, Mothica released her 12-song album “Blue Hour,” which addressed her journey towards sobriety and also appeared on music charts. This was followed by the EP “Forever Fifteen” in March 2021 and her second studio album, “Nocturnal,” in July 2022. She is set to release her third album, “Kissing Death,” in August 2024.
Mothica maintains a strong presence on TikTok, where she openly shares her experiences with depression, sobriety, and hair loss with over 500,000 followers. She has collaborated with other artists, including being featured by Ellise and DeathbyRomy on “Soul Sucker pt 2” in 2021, and with Scene Queen on “The Rapture (But it’s Pink)” in 2022. She has also worked with artists such as nothing,nowhere., Royal & the Serpent, and MEMBA.
