Old 97’s is an American rock band that originated in Dallas, Texas, in 1992. The band’s consistent lineup includes Rhett Miller on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Murry Hammond on bass guitar and vocals, Ken Bethea on lead guitar and vocals, and Philip Peeples on drums and backing vocals. The band gained initial recognition as a popular bar band in Dallas, which led to tours and broader exposure. Their early sound defined a significant part of the alt-country movement in the mid-1990s, evolving into a more power pop style in the 2000s.
The band released their debut album, “Hitchhike to Rhome,” in 1994, followed by the split EP “Stoned / Garage Sale” in 1995. These initial releases attracted the attention of Bloodshot Records, under which they released “Wreck Your Life” in 1995. This album further propelled their career, leading to a contract with Elektra Records. Their music has been featured in various films and television series, including “The Break-Up,” “Clay Pigeons,” and “Veronica Mars,” showcasing their versatility.
