Philip Bailey

Philip James Bailey was born on May 8, 1951, in Denver, Colorado. He attended East High School in Denver and later pursued higher education at Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado. During his early career, Bailey was a member of a local R&B band called Friends & Love, where he honed his musical skills and began to cultivate his unique vocal style. His musical influences were diverse, ranging from jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane to Motown artists such as Stevie Wonder, and female vocalists like Sarah Vaughan and Dionne Warwick, all of whom contributed to the development of his broad musicality.

In 1972, while attending the University of Colorado, Philip Bailey was invited to join the burgeoning group Earth, Wind & Fire by its founder, Maurice White. This marked a pivotal moment in his career, as he quickly became one of the band’s two lead vocalists, known for his signature falsetto. He contributed lead vocals to many of the band’s most iconic songs, including “Devotion,” “Reasons,” and “Fantasy,” and shared lead duties on hits like “Shining Star” and “September.” His exceptional vocal talent and stage presence were instrumental in the band’s rise to international fame, leading to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Bailey’s contributions as a songwriter also earned him a place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, recognizing his enduring impact on music.

Beyond his work with Earth, Wind & Fire, Bailey embarked on a successful solo career, highlighted by his 1984 album “Chinese Wall” and the hit duet “Easy Lover” with Phil Collins, which garnered a Grammy nomination and an MTV Video Music Award. He also explored gospel music, releasing several albums in the genre, with “Triumph” receiving a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance, Male. In May 2008, Berklee College of Music honored him with an Honorary Doctorate of Music, and in November 2017, he was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, further solidifying his legacy as a versatile and influential artist. His most recent jazz album, “Love Will Find A Way” (2019), topped the Billboard Jazz Albums charts and earned him the Soul Act of the Year at the 2020 Jazz FM Awards, demonstrating his continued artistic relevance.
