In May 2020, just weeks after their former band Red Sun Rising announced an indefinite hiatus on February 28, 2020, three Akron, Ohio musicians quietly reemerged under a new name: The Violent. Guitarist and vocalist Mike Protich, alongside Dave McGarry and Pat Gerasia, carried forward the momentum of their previous project while charting a fresh creative path.
The roots of the new band actually stretched back to 2019, when the trio had already begun playing together, billed simply as “Mike Protich.” During those early shows, they performed material that sat outside the Red Sun Rising discography, quietly testing the waters for what would eventually become a full-fledged new identity.
When their debut single “Fly on the Wall” arrived on May 22, 2020, the band deliberately withheld their names from the public. Instead, they introduced themselves as a “new independent unsigned band,” letting the music speak for itself and building intrigue among listeners who wondered who was behind the track.
The mystery did not last long. The musicians soon revealed their identities during an interview on Sirius XM Octane, confirming the connection to Red Sun Rising and officially establishing The Violent as their next chapter. The reveal was met with enthusiasm from fans who had followed the members through their previous work, eager to hear how their songwriting had evolved in this new incarnation.
