Paul Sylvester Morton Jr., known professionally as PJ Morton, was born on March 29, 1981, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His musical journey began early, influenced by his father, Bishop Paul S. Morton, a prominent gospel singer. Morton graduated from St. Augustine High School and later earned a marketing degree from Morehouse College in 2003. His career started with gospel songwriting and production, earning him Dove and Stellar Awards in 2008 for his work on India.Arie’s music.
Morton joined Maroon 5 as a touring keyboardist and backing vocalist in 2010, becoming an official member in 2012. Throughout his tenure with Maroon 5, he has contributed to albums such as “Overexposed” (2012), “V” (2014), “Red Pill Blues” (2017), and “Jordi” (2021). Parallel to his band activities, Morton developed a significant solo career. In 2012, he released his debut solo EP, “Following My First Mind,” through Young Money Entertainment. This was followed by his major-label debut album, “New Orleans,” in 2013, which featured Stevie Wonder. The lead single “Only One” received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song in 2014.
In 2016, Morton established his record label, Morton Records, in New Orleans, aspiring to create a “New Orleans Motown.” His self-released album, “Gumbo” (2017), earned two Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song. He continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including “Paul” (2019), which won a Grammy for Best R&B Song for “Say So” featuring JoJo. His gospel album “Gospel According to PJ” (2020) won a Grammy for Best Gospel Album, and his 2024 album “Cape Town to Cairo” highlighted collaborations with African artists. Morton’s diverse contributions extend to film scores and collaborations with various artists, solidifying his multifaceted career in the music industry.
