Many of the touring members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band were hired by Harold Dejan for his Olympia Brass Band during the late 1960s and early 1970s. This band influenced the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and its musicians.
In 1977, Allan Jaffe and Arthur Hall released "Fat Tuesday and All That Jazz! A Mardi Gras Dance Musical." The world premiere was on February 19, 1977, followed by a U.S. tour. Dejan's Olympia Brass Band was featured alongside the Arthur Hall Afro-American Dance Ensemble.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band originated in the early 1960s in New Orleans, Louisiana, founded by tuba player Allan Jaffe. The band draws its name from Preservation Hall in the French Quarter, an art gallery managed by Larry Borenstein that hosted local jazz musicians. Jaffe and his wife Sandra took over management of the Hall, hiring elderly local musicians who were often struggling with poverty and illness. Initially, the Hall maintained a simple approach with no alcohol, amplification, or advertising. In 1963, Allan Jaffe began organizing tours for these musicians across the U.S. and internationally, featuring notable figures such as pianist Sweet Emma Barrett and trumpeter Kid Thomas Valentine. This initiative brought traditional New Orleans jazz to a global audience, attracting fans who traveled to New Orleans specifically for the music.
Following Allan Jaffe’s passing in 1987, his son Ben Jaffe, after graduating from Oberlin College, assumed the role of artistic director in 1993. Ben Jaffe continued to tour with the band, playing double bass and tuba, and expanded on his father’s educational initiatives. By 1999, the band’s lineup evolved to include younger African-American players and international white musicians, reflecting a new generation of talent while maintaining the traditional jazz style. The band continued its extensive touring schedule, nationally and internationally, and in 2006, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band received the National Medal of Arts, the highest artistic honor in the United States, in recognition of their contributions to American culture and their role in sharing the spirit of New Orleans jazz worldwide.
The band has also engaged in significant collaborations and milestone projects. In 2011, they partnered with Dr. John and The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, among others, demonstrating their versatility. Their 50th-anniversary celebration in 2011-2012 included a concert at Carnegie Hall with artists like Allen Toussaint and Jim James, an exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The band made a guest appearance on the Foo Fighters’ album “Sonic Highways” in 2014 and collaborated with the Trey McIntyre Project dance ensemble for contemporary dance works. A documentary, “A Tuba to Cuba,” was released in 2018, further showcasing their musical journey and cultural impact.
