Raef Al Hasan Rafa, born on October 27, 1988, is a Bangladeshi musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. His early childhood was spent in Libya due to his father’s job. After returning to Dhaka, Bangladesh at age 5, he attended Maple Leaf International School. Despite being encouraged to learn Nazrul Geeti and harmonium, his musical interest initially was limited. His older brother, Saadi Muktafi, a guitarist, influenced his later engagement with music. Rafa unexpectedly discovered a deep connection with music around grade 7, which marked the beginning of his musical journey. He is the youngest child in his family.
His career began with early performances at underground shows in Dhaka, sharing stages with established bands like Artcell and Aurthohin. Rafa became known as the former drummer for the rock band Aurthohin and the metal band Cryptic Fate. He was also a member of Severe Dementia, Kral, and The Joint Family. In 2021, he married Samira Kamil. Rafa is the founding member of his rock band, AvoidRafa, a name he coined spontaneously for a show. He has described himself as patient, stubborn, and gifted, and notes that a personal struggle is his inability to decline requests, leading to overcommitment. Rafa is a self-taught musician across multiple instruments.
Beyond performing, Rafa has built a reputation as a music producer and sound engineer. He has produced albums for bands such as Powersurge, Topu, and Aurthohin, including ‘Noy Maash’ for Cryptic Fate in 2013. His production work also extends to numerous TV and radio commercials and other soundtracks for various brands and campaigns, including Ecstasy, Rexona, Grameenphone, and Coca-Cola. Rafa’s career reflects a sustained commitment to music, from performing in diverse bands to contributing significantly behind the scenes through production and engineering.
