Ali Gatie was born in Yemen on May 31, 1997, to Iraqi parents. His family relocated to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, before eventually settling in Canada, outside of Toronto. Growing up, Gatie was exposed to a diverse array of musical influences, including Ed Sheeran, J. Cole, and Frank Ocean, which would later shape his unique sound. He began pursuing a music career at the age of 18 and started recording in 2016, a decision that led him to discontinue his university studies in business.
Gatie’s career began to solidify in 2017 when he won an online RhymeStars competition organized by Joe Budden. Following the release of several singles throughout 2018, he secured a record deal with Warner Records. His initial commercial success came with the song “Moonlight,” which garnered significant attention on YouTube. However, it was the release of “It’s You” in June 2019 that marked his mainstream breakthrough, achieving global success and an “explosive streaming story.” As of December 2019, “It’s You” had accumulated over 650 million streams worldwide, charting on the US Billboard Hot 100, and reaching top positions in countries like Australia, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand, and Germany.
Demonstrating consistent career progression, Gatie released his debut EP, “You,” on November 8, 2019. This EP was accompanied by a 12-minute film that featured seven new tracks, further showcasing his artistic vision. Since May 2020, Ali Gatie has been managed by SAL&CO, a significant step in his professional management. He continued to release music, including the EP “The Idea of Her” in March 2021 and the studio albums “Who Hurt You?” in August 2022 and “All the Things I Wish I Said” in March 2024, maintaining his connection with his audience through relatable and emotional music.
