Shy Glizzy

Marquis Amonte King, known professionally as Shy Glizzy, was born on December 12, 1992, in Washington D.C. He began his music career in 2010, initially releasing mixtapes. His early projects, such as “No Brain” (2011) and “Law” (2012), showcased his developing style. He gained recognition for his raw delivery and repetitive yet catchy hooks. In 2012, Complex magazine recognized him as one of “10 New DMV Rappers To Watch Out For.” He continued to build his discography with mixtapes like “Fly Money” (2012) and “Fxck Rap” (2012), featuring collaborations with artists such as Jose Guapo and Trinidad James. His early work established a foundation for his distinct sound within the DMV hip-hop scene.

His career significantly advanced with the release of his seventh mixtape, “Young Jefe,” in 2014, which featured the hit single “Awwsome.” This track reached number 45 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. A remix of “Awwsome” included A$AP Rocky and 2 Chainz, further expanding its reach. In 2015, Shy Glizzy was named part of the XXL magazine Freshman Class. He released additional mixtapes, including “Be Careful” (2015) with his Glizzy Gang collective and “For Trappers Only” (2015), which was entirely produced by Zaytoven and included guest appearances from Boosie Badazz and Ty Dolla $ign. His 2016 single “Crew” with GoldLink and Brent Faiyaz garnered wide attention, peaking at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Performance. This period marked a turning point, elevating his national profile.

In 2017, he released the EP “The World Is Yours” under the moniker Jefe. This was followed by his 12th mixtape, “Quiet Storm,” in the same year. In 2018, Shy Glizzy released his debut studio album, “Fully Loaded,” which featured a range of artists including YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, Gunna, and Rick Ross. The album reached number 35 on the Billboard 200, achieving commercial success. He continued releasing projects, including “Covered ‘N Blood” (2019) and “Aloha” (2019), demonstrating his consistent output and evolving artistry. His third studio album, “Young Jefe 3,” was released in 2020, and “Flowers” followed in 2023, solidifying his presence in the hip-hop landscape.
