Vanessa Chantal Paradis, born on December 22, 1972, in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Val-de-Marne, France, began her career at a young age. Her early exposure to the entertainment industry included dance lessons, piano basics, and child modeling. At the age of seven, she appeared on the local television program “L’École des fans,” a talent show for child singers. Paradis’s professional music career began with her first single, “La Magie des surprises-parties,” recorded in 1983. In 1987, at the age of 14, she achieved international fame with her song “Joe le taxi,” which topped the charts in France for 11 weeks and reached number three in the United Kingdom. This success led to her debut album, “M&J” (for Marilyn & John).
Her career further progressed in 1989 when she left high school to focus on her music. In 1990, Paradis released the album “Variations sur le même t’aime,” which included a remake of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” That same year, she received the César Award for Most Promising Actress for her role in the film “Noce Blanche,” and the Victoires de la Musique award for Best Female Singer. In 1992, she collaborated with Lenny Kravitz on her English-language album “Vanessa Paradis,” which topped the French charts and featured the hit single “Be My Baby.” Her acting career continued with roles in films like “Élisa” (1995), “Witch Way Love” (1997), “Une chance sur deux” (1998), and “Girl on the Bridge” (1999).
Throughout her career, Paradis has maintained a significant presence in music, film, and fashion. She released albums such as “Bliss” (2000) and “Divinidylle” (2007), with the latter earning her two Victoires de la Musique awards in 2008. Her film roles include “Heartbreaker” (2010), “Café de Flore” (2011), for which she won a Genie Award for Best Actress, and “Knife + Heart” (2018). In addition to her artistic endeavors, she has been a prominent figure in the fashion world, notably as a spokesmodel for Chanel since 1991, chosen by Karl Lagerfeld. In 2021, she made her theatre debut in the play “Maman,” earning a Molière Award nomination.
