Softcult is a dynamic Canadian grunge duo formed by twin siblings Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn, known for their innovative blend of grunge and shoegaze. Emerging from the pop-punk band Courage My Love, which they disbanded in 2020 due to creative constraints, the duo launched Softcult with a vision to explore deeper social commentary through their music. Their debut single, “Another Bish,” released on January 15, 2021, marked the beginning of a promising new chapter, showcasing their unique sound and lyrical depth.
In April 2021, Softcult released their first EP, “Year of the Rat,” through Easy Life Records, which was well-received and set the stage for their subsequent projects. Their second EP, “Year of the Snake,” tackled pressing societal issues, including a poignant response to the tragic murder of Sarah Everard. The duo’s third EP, “See You in the Dark,” released in March 2023, drew inspiration from iconic bands like My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins, earning them a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year in 2024.
Continuing their momentum, Softcult released their fourth EP, “Heaven,” on May 24, 2024, further solidifying their place in the alternative music scene. Their sound has been characterized by a rich tapestry of influences, including the riot grrrl movement and notable albums from the 1990s, which they cite as foundational to their artistic identity.
In addition to their musical endeavors, Softcult has embraced a DIY ethos, launching a monthly zine, SCripture, that addresses environmental, social, and political issues. This initiative reflects their commitment to activism and community engagement, reinforcing the messages behind their music. With their powerful sound and meaningful contributions, Softcult continues to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide.
