Sunset Rollercoaster is a 5-piece jazz-influenced synth-pop band originally formed in 2009 in Taipei, Taiwan. The band consists of Kuo-Hung Tseng (vocals, guitar), Hung-Li Chen (bass), Shao-Hsuan Wang (keyboard), Tsun-Lung Lo (drums), and Hao-Ting Huang (saxophone). The name originated from a Photo Booth picture taken by the group in 2009 for their MySpace profile, featuring a rollercoaster against a sunset backdrop. After releasing their debut album, “Bossa Nova,” in 2011, the band temporarily disbanded. In 2015, Sunset Rollercoaster reformed.
Following their reformation, the band released their second album, “Cassa Nova,” in 2018. The same year, they recorded a live studio session at Audiotree, notable as the first Taiwanese band to achieve this. In 2019, they released the EP “Vanilla Villa.” The group has also toured extensively, including a North American “Business Trip Tour” in 2018. The band’s music, while based in a Mandarin-speaking country, primarily features English lyrics, a deliberate choice by lead singer Kuo Kuo to allow for indirect expression and diverse audience interpretation.
Sunset Rollercoaster’s significant achievements include performing at Japan’s Summer Sonic music festival in 2011 and New York City’s SummerStage in Central Park as part of the Taiwanese Waves music festival in 2017. Their 2020 album, “Soft Storm,” was recognized by NME as the 4th best album in Asia that year. They composed three songs featured in the anime “Sonny Boy.” In 2024, they collaborated with the band Hyukoh on the album “AAA,” which earned seven nominations for the 36th Golden Melody Awards. In 2025, their album “AAA” with Hyukoh won Best Vocal Recording Album, and the music video for “Antenna” won Best Music Video at the 36th Golden Melody Awards. Additionally, they secured an award for Best Album Design.
