About

Switchfoot originated in 1996 as Chin Up, formed by brothers Jon and Tim Foreman along with Chad Butler in San Diego, California. Their early career saw them signed to Re:think Records, releasing their first three albums: “The Legend of Chin,” “New Way to Be Human,” and the Grammy-nominated “Learning to Breathe.” Despite intentions for broader market appeal, their initial releases were primarily marketed to Christian radio and retail outlets. A turning point came in 2002 when their music was prominently featured in the film “A Walk to Remember,” which led to increased mainstream recognition and a deal with Columbia Records.

Their major label debut, “The Beautiful Letdown,” released in 2003, achieved double-platinum status, selling over 2.6 million copies. This success was fueled by popular singles like “Meant to Live” and “Dare You to Move,” and extensive touring. Keyboardist Jerome Fontamillas, who had been touring since 2000, became a full member, influencing a more layered sound. In 2005, guitarist Drew Shirley officially joined, further shaping their sound towards a guitar-heavy style. They continued to release successful albums like “Nothing Is Sound” (2005), which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and “Oh! Gravity.” (2006). A significant career progression occurred in 2007 when the band became independent, forming lowercase people records to connect directly with their fanbase.

This independence allowed for creative freedom, leading to their seventh album, “Hello Hurricane” (2009), which earned them a Grammy Award for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album in 2011. They consistently engaged with their audience through projects like the “Fading West” album and film (2014) and continued humanitarian efforts, most notably with their annual Switchfoot Bro-Am Surf Contest and concert, which has raised over $1 million for various charities. The band has released multiple albums since, including “Where the Light Shines Through” (2016) and “Native Tongue” (2019), and most recently, a re-recording of “The Beautiful Letdown” (2023) to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
