T. Hardy Morris, born in Augusta, GA, established himself as a musician in the 1990s and 2000s. He gained recognition as the guitarist and singer for the psych-influenced hard rock band Dead Confederate, which he co-founded in Augusta in 1997 with Walker Howle. The band evolved from a jam-oriented group, Redbelly, to a more focused ensemble due to Morris’s songwriting contributions. Dead Confederate secured a record deal in 2007 and, through consistent touring and album releases, became a notable act in the roots rock scene.
Alongside his work with Dead Confederate, Morris expanded his musical collaborations. In 2011, he joined the ad hoc group Diamond Rugs, a project initiated by John McCauley of Deer Tick. This group included members from prominent bands such as the Black Lips (Ian St. Pé), Los Lobos (Steve Berlin), and Six Finger Satellite (Bryan Dufresne), along with Deer Tick’s Robbie Crowell. Diamond Rugs released their self-titled debut album in 2012 and a second album, “Cosmetics,” in 2015. Following Dead Confederate’s dissolution in 2013 after their “In the Marrow” album, Morris pursued a solo career, releasing his debut, “Audition Tapes,” in 2013, which showcased a more country and folk-inspired rock sound under the moniker T. Hardy Morris & the Outfit.
Morris continued to diversify his solo output over subsequent years. In 2015, he released “Drownin’ on a Mountaintop” as Hardy & the Hardknocks, an album characterized by a more rock-oriented sound influenced by ’70s country-rock. His third solo effort, “Dude, The Obscure,” released in 2018, explored introspective and darker themes. This was followed by “The Digital Age of Rome” in 2021, which addressed contemporary issues related to technology and societal polarization. Morris is also credited for “Artificial Tears,” scheduled for release in 2025. Throughout his career, Morris has demonstrated a consistent output across various musical projects, contributing to multiple albums as a primary artist, composer, vocalist, and guitarist.
