Born on March 20, 1968, in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Ultra Naté displayed her singing talent from a young age. Influenced by diverse artists like Marvin Gaye and Boy George, she developed an experimental approach to her music and style. Her career began with a major label deal with Warner Bros. Records in the UK in 1989. Her debut album, “Blue Notes in the Basement” (1991), was produced with the Basement Boys and featured singles such as “It’s Over Now,” “Deeper Love (Missing You),” and “Is It Love.” In 1993, she released her alternative dance/house album “One Woman’s Insanity,” collaborating with Nellee Hooper and D-Influence, which included the US Dance chart-topping single “Show Me.” Despite critical acclaim, her initial releases did not achieve significant mainstream sales, leading to her departure from the label.
Ultra Naté transitioned to the independent dance label Strictly Rhythm, where she released her most recognized mainstream hit, “Free,” in 1997. Co-written by Naté, Lem Springsteen, and John Ciafone, this track gained extensive airplay in clubs and on radio stations across America and Europe, peaking at number 75 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the UK Singles Chart. “Free” played a key role in her album “Situation: Critical” reaching number seventeen on the UK Albums Chart. Subsequent singles like “Found a Cure” (No. 6 in the UK) and “New Kind of Medicine” (No. 14 in the UK) further solidified her European success. In 1998, as part of Stars on 54 with Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez, she released a cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind,” which reached No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.
Throughout her career, Ultra Naté has consistently achieved success on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart, with nearly all her singles reaching the Top 10. She continued to release albums such as “Stranger Than Fiction” (2001) and “Grime, Silk, & Thunder” (2007), which featured hits like her number-one covers “Automatic” and “Give It All You Got” featuring Chris Willis. In December 2016, Billboard magazine recognized her as the 12th most successful dance artist of all time. Her musical journey also includes collaborations with artists like Michelle Williams, Quentin Harris, and Tony Moran, and she maintains an active presence as a DJ and promoter.
